Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield is committed to an ambitious sustainability strategy to address the commercial real estate industry’s biggest challenges. The strategy, Better Places 2030, reflects Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s initiative to create better places every day. To do this, the company is pushing for a low-emission economy, promoting new types of sustainable mobility at an early stage, integrating its business activities into the local community, and involving the entire team and all stakeholders.
AN AMBITIOUS STRATEGY
The key objective of the sustainability strategy is to reduce the Group’s CO2 emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 compared to 2015. Ambitious targets have already been set for the period beyond as well. The company is integrating its commitment to a low-carbon future into the entire value chain and is launching a wide range of initiatives to achieve its targets. The focus is on involving all corporate activities along with service providers, stakeholders and business partners. This makes Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield the first listed company in the commercial enterprise sector to commit to such an ambitious and comprehensive strategy.
THE THREE PILLARS OF THE BETTER PLACES 2030 AGENDA
THE BETTER PLACES AGENDA
The Better Places 2030 agenda stands on three pillars. Each pillar includes a global goal, which is further broken down into specific and measurable sub-goals. Some of these should be achieved in the short term, others progressively by 2030. In addition, clear targets are set for the coming decades. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield encourages all employees and partners to actively participate in order to achieve the ambitious targets of this agenda. Engagement is regularly reviewed on the basis of defined indicators and progress reports.
Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is shaping the urban space of tomorrow. Here, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield wants to create a field of experimentation and practice that demonstrates how sustainable ideas can be implemented, used and communicated in everyday corporate life. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield’s Better Hamburg promise: to create a place that sets new sustainability standards.
All buildings will carry BREEAM Communities & BREEAM New Construction Excellent certification; office buildings C & D (D1 & D2) will also carry DGNB Gold.
Low-emission buildings are created by avoiding the use of solvent-based paints or toxic varnishes. All building materials are tested by authorised experts before construction begins.
The Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier was the first major project to be awarded the new DGNB certification for sustainable construction sites. The new DGNB construction site certification is based on compliance with numerous criteria from the five areas of construction site organisation, resource protection, health and social issues, communication with the local community and quality of construction.
In addition to the measures mentioned below, the company pays attention to a holistically considered sustainable construction method and consistently reviews all building materials along their entire value chain with regard to potential alternatives. For example, steel with a high recycled content and a modular construction method are utilised, tropical wood is not used, built-in hollow bodies reduce material consumption, textile concrete is used, additional energy is saved through the use of heat pumps, and wooden structures are applied instead of aluminium and steel for dry walls.
